One Note at a Time, Paul’s Stroke Journey.

Paul's life changed unexpectedly while driving alone from Grand Digue, New Brunswick, to Montreal, Quebec. During the trip, he began stumbling and experiencing alarming symptoms.

Knowing this was unusual, Paul found a nearby hospital, and doctors conducted multiple tests and MRIs before confirming that he had suffered a stroke on the right side of his brain.

He spent two months in the hospital and rehabilitation in Montreal before returning to New Brunswick to continue his recovery. Although the transition home happened faster than expected, Paul was concerned about managing on his own without the family and friends he had nearby in Montreal.

Physical and cognitive rehabilitation became a key part of his recovery. Working with an occupational therapist helped him regain confidence and adapt to everyday tasks.

"Before the stroke, you take advantage of everything you do in your day-to-day life," Paul said. "All of a sudden, I had to really focus."

Music also became an important source of comfort. "When you're alone, music is there for you," he said. While it was discouraging at first to find some songs harder to play, the experience gave him a new appreciation for music. "It made me appreciate music a bit more by being able to slow down."

During rehabilitation, Paul connected with Stroke Navigator Jannick through Heart & Stroke NB’s Stroke Navigation Program, who helped him understand the resources available to support his recovery. The guidance and reassurance he received gave him the confidence to move forward independently.

Today, Paul reflects on his recovery as a journey of resilience, adaptation, and learning to find strength in the support and passions that carried him through.
